Cardiac Care Unit

This facility has centralized control before and after the operation of heart diseases. We contribute to the treatment of high-risk congenital heart diseases with high-level medical technology. We also have the top experience in Japan in terms of the treatment of congenital heart diseases using catheters.

Management System

A four-bed intensive care unit was opened in 1996 as a new department. The number of beds increased to 10 in 2007 and to 22 (16 for children and six for adults) in April 2008 with a growing number of operations. After the completion of new Advanced Medical Center in May 2013, the number of beds will increase from 12 to 16 in Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Unit (CCCU) and from 6 to 10 in the Adult Cardiac Critical Care Unit. They are the units with the world’s most advanced medical equipment, capable of supplying a high level of medical care. In cooperation with many departments, including cardiovascular surgery, anesthesiology, pediatrics, and cardiovascular medicine, we provide a high level of intensive care.

Management Policy

Cardiovascular Surgery, which has the world top-level operative results, attracts numerous referred patients not only from Japan, but also from overseas. Many of the beds are used for newborns and pediatric patients. The contents of treatment include many high-level surgical procedures, such as the Norwood procedure and the Fontan procedure, with specialized doctors, nurses, and laboratory technicians practicing team medicine. We also work with emergency cases 24 hours a day such as acute myocardial infarction and dissecting aneurysm of the aorta.

Catheter Treatment of Atrial Septal Defect

For the catheter treatment of atrial septal defect, we have top-level treatment experience (more than 700 treated cases) and a high treatment success rate in Japan. We provide treatment to patients with a higher level of difficulty; the number reaches 100 cases every year. Particularly with respect to atrial septal defect in adults, patients are referred to us from all over Japan. The treatment results have been highly regarded internationally.
We have started the catheter treatment of patent foramen ovale, which can be a cause of recurrent cerebral infarction. It is believed to be a major cause of young adult cerebral infarction in particular; we accept referrals.
