Hospital Pharmacy

Bearing in mind “to take responsibility for all problems related to drugs in the hospital as a team of drug professionals,” we promote safe medication of good quality.

Management System

The Hospital Pharmacy consists of the Dispensary, Drug Control, Narcotic Control, Manufacturing, Drugs Information, Drug Control Guidance, Cancer Chemotherapy Control, Pharmaceutical Research, Clinical Testing Management, and Clinical Trial Support. We strive to improve the efficiency of services through mutual collaboration.

Management Policy

  • Be thorough with preventive measures against any malpractice related to drugs.
  • Develop services that contribute to hospital management.
  • Provide effective and safer medication and good-quality pharmaceutical services.
  • Aim to foster the skills of doctors and nurses who can cope with the proper use of drugs and pharmacists who have a high degree of specialization and can do research conforming to clinical practice.

Efforts at Active Team Medicine

Hospital Pharmacy staff members are assigned to each ward to contribute to safe and effective medication through ward service and to participate in the planning of “team medicine” making use of their specialization. Additionally in outpatient clinics, pharmacists are actively involved in the Cancer Chemotherapy Team to enhance the efficacy and safety of cancer chemotherapy. Implementing efficient and safe drug treatment by Hospital Pharmacy in cooperation with other medical staff is the basis for good-quality medical practice.

Preparation of Internal and External Medicine

The dispensary prepares internal and external medicine for patients. To secure safety, we take a double or triple check system. Particularly with regard to powdered and liquid medicine, we strive to dispense them safely using computer processes to prevent errors when dispensing and introducing audiovisual automatic inspection systems.

Control and Delivery of Injection Drugs

Drug Control properly controls the quality of injected drugs used in the hospital and delivers them to wards by setting a day’s injection drugs by the patient as needed. In doing so, we use injected drugs properly and provide efficient and safe drug treatment.

Admixture Dispensing of Antineoplastic Drugs

We do aseptic preparation for anticancer drugs prescribed by doctors with strict prescription inspection based on the protocol. In addition, deepening our cooperation with doctors, nurses, and other staff, we promote safety assurance and the proper use of anticancer drugs and the establishment of measures against side effects.

Provision of Drug Information

Drug Information collects information related to drugs, such as the adverse drug reactions, the stability (light, humidity, and temperature) and the acceptability of admixture of injection drugs, and provides information to doctors, nurses, and other staff. Furthermore, we issue the in-hospital information publication “Kusuri no madoguchi” to provide drug information to patients.

Measurement and Analysis of Drug Levels in the Blood

Some drugs can maximize therapeutic effects while avoiding side effects by rigorously controlling drug levels in the blood. Pharmaceutical Research makes suggestions to doctors about the proper dosage and administration method after running simulations to ascertain the best drug level in the blood for the treatment.

Promotion of Proper Drug Use in Inpatient Wards

Okayama University Hospital assigns pharmacists to all wards to provide proper, safe, and efficient drug treatment to inpatients. Ward pharmacists check inpatients’ internal use and adverse drug reactions and contribute to the promotion of proper use of drugs in collaboration with doctors, nurses, and other medical staff through patient compliance instructions and drug control guidance to provide effective and safe drug treatment to inpatients.

Support for Clinical Trials

In the Clinical Trial Support, clinical trial coordinators (CRCs) support clinical trials, including clinical testing to enable patients to participate in clinical trials without anxiety. Clinical Testing Management performs services such as management of investigational drugs, preparation of investigational injection drugs, and management of documents related to clinical testing for clinical trials to be conducted properly and safely.

Research and Education

We perform clinical pharmaceutical research considering proper medication to patients, and further provide education of basic and clinical pharmacology to medical, dental, and nursing students, training of clinical practice to pharmacy students, and education of clinical pharmacology and medical pharmacy to graduate students. With regard to research, we conduct widely diverse basic and clinical studies related to drugs as described below.

Basic Research

  • Behavioral pharmacology of centrally acting drugs such as psychotropic drugs
    1) Development of animal models of anticancer drugs induced psychiatric disorders and cognition impairment
    2) Development of animal models of treatment-resistant depression for hyperactivity in the HPA axis of rats
    3) Elucidation of motivation and reward mechanisms, estimation of experimental methods and motivational properties of psychoactive drugs
  • Molecular basis of molecular-targeting drug resistance and identification of new therapeutic strategies to drug resistance and reccurence of malignant tumor
  • Establishment of prevention of drug-induced adverse reactions
    1) Prevention of adverse reactions on antineoplastic drugs
    2) Relation between blood level and adverse reactions on molecular-targeting drugs
    3) Elucidation of adverse events on polymerization agents in injectable fluids
