Actually, NST of Okayama University Hospital, a team consisting of a number of hospital staff beyond professions, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, registered dietitians, psysical therapist, medical technologist, dental hygienist, dental technician, and clerical staff, aims to support patient nutrition from the time of admission until discharge.

Description of Activities

  • NST meeting and NST round: once or twice a week. After having a meeting at the training room of the Clinical Dietary Division, rounds are made.
  • NST study meeting: 18:00 to 19:00 on the fourth Friday of every month. Started in June 2002, it was held 148 times (as of March, 2017).

Features

Our NST, which started its activities in April 2002, became a certified educational facility for practical training by the Japanese Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition in April 2003 and NST operating facilities by Japan Society of Metabolism and Clinical Nutrition in April 2004.
As a university hospital, the Team can collaborate with specialists of diverse diseases and provide various supportive measures. One important feature is the capability of taking a dental approach. The Team is also an educational facility that puts a great deal of effort in education for NST special therapists and which provides 40-hour training.
Another feature is to have numerous acutely ill patients. In many cases, they are discharged or transferred to other hospitals before the results of nutrition intervention are available. Therefore, we are engaged in assessment during the acute phase and in regional collaboration after discharge.
